Saint Francis of Assisi 800th anniversary marked by global commemorations

Various religious, cultural, and academic events are being held globally to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi.

In Assisi, the Cortile di Francesco 2026 features diverse programming, including floral art displays by Spello masters, discussions on artificial intelligence and human dignity, and musical performances. Other Italian regions are hosting specific commemorations, such as a historical and spiritual meeting in Taranto, a Franciscan family gathering in Calabria, and inclusive cultural itineraries in the Marche region. Additionally, the reintroduction of Saint Francis' Day as a national holiday in Italy has implications for labor and payroll management.

International observances include a symposium in Utrecht, Netherlands, focused on Franciscan spirituality and its relevance to modern themes like sustainability and migration, and a concert in Weert, Netherlands. In Malta, Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi has reflected on the saint's enduring message of following Christ through service and poverty.
