Strait of Hormuz: US and Iran dispute control amid tanker attacks

The United States and Iran are engaged in a heated dispute over the control and status of the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has dismissed Iranian claims that the strait is closed, asserting that the U.S. and its regional partners maintain clear control. CENTCOM reports that approximately 20 million barrels of crude oil are currently passing through the waterway.

Conversely, a senior official from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) has claimed that the strait is closed and under Tehran's full control, warning that certain 'illegal' transit routes will soon be blocked. Despite these tensions, some data suggests a recovery in energy flows, with oil exports from the Gulf reaching roughly 80-90 percent of pre-conflict levels, though analysts note that logistics have become more expensive and inefficient due to the need for ship-to-ship transfers and alternative routes.

Security in the region remains volatile. Reports indicate at least 12 attacks on tankers occurred between September 28 and October 5. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for both nations to return to diplomatic negotiations, praising Pakistan's role as a mediator. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the U.S. will not accept any agreement that allows Iran to possess nuclear weapons.
