Marco Rubio leads US ministerial on far‑left political terrorism

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio opened a ministerial conference in Washington on 16 July 2026 that brought together delegations from more than 60 countries across the Americas, Europe and Asia. The meeting, titled the “Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism,” focuses on what the Trump administration describes as a trans‑national revival of far‑left extremist violence. Rubio told participants that “the threat of far‑left terrorism is a real and transnational threat” and urged that “we must crush this evil forever.”

The summit aims to expand intelligence sharing, coordinate law‑enforcement actions and consider designating additional left‑wing groups as terrorist organisations. Attendees include officials from Mexico, North Macedonia, Kosovo and other European states; senior U.S. officials such as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are also expected. Critics – including the ACLU, CSIS analysts and some European diplomats – warn the focus on left‑wing groups could politicise counter‑terrorism and target lawful protest activity.

The United States hopes the gathering will strengthen international cooperation against politically motivated violence, while opponents question whether far‑left violence currently poses a greater threat than right‑wing or jihadist extremism.
