Rubio expands far‑left terrorism coalition
Entities: International delegations (66 countries) · far‑left political movements · Washington, D.C. · Marco Rubio · U.S. Department of State
Overview
Following the July 14‑16 ministerial summit in Washington, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a permanent global coalition of 66 nations to counter trans‑national far‑left political terrorism. The United States introduced visa restrictions, expanded Treasury sanctions on four European groups and offered up to $10 million for information on their financing, while pledging grant programmes for European civil‑society groups. On 16 July Rubio reiterated the coalition framework, emphasizing coordinated intelligence sharing and financial targeting. Two days later the White House issued NSPM‑7, directing U.S. agencies to treat violent far‑left, anarchist, pro‑Iranian, antisemitic and eco‑terrorist groups with the same priority as jihadist threats. Critics likened the approach to COINTELPRO. The UK made arrests on terrorism charges and the UN imposed a sanction on a human‑rights expert. Mexico’s president declined to attend; Cuba’s leader Miguel Díaz‑Canel condemned the initiative. Later on 16 July Rubio chaired a ministerial conference with delegations from more than 66 countries, again calling far‑left political violence a distinct global menace and proposing visa curbs and financial measures. He accused the Cuban regime of fostering extreme‑left movements in the hemisphere; Cuban officials rejected the claim, describing the U.S. rhetoric as McCarthy‑style accusations and likening it to historic right‑wing alliances. At the summit Rubio was joined by Trump‑aligned advisers, including Stephen Miller, and repeatedly cited NSPM‑7. No public intelligence or judicial evidence of an organized far‑left threat was presented, prompting critics to label the meeting a “witch hunt” and compare it to McCarthy‑era anti‑communist campaigns.
