Marco Rubio expels Iranian delegation following failed peace talks

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered the Iranian peace delegation to leave the United States following a breakdown in negotiations. The delegation, which included Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, had remained in New York after the UN General Assembly to attempt to renew a fragile agreement that had expired the previous month.

Negotiations reached a deadlock on September 28, after the Trump administration rejected a proposal from Tehran regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. As a sign of deep mistrust, Rubio ordered the delegation to depart immediately rather than waiting for their scheduled departure on Tuesday. The Iranian officials departed New York for Doha in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
