United States demands increased action against Mexican drug cartels

U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have issued strong messages regarding the bilateral relationship with Mexico, focusing heavily on combating transnational organized crime and drug trafficking.

In an annual Presidential Memorandum, President Trump maintained Mexico's status on the list of major drug production and transit countries for fiscal year 2027. While acknowledging the efforts of President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration in seizing drugs and dismantling laboratories, Trump urged Mexico to take more decisive action. He specifically called for the exposure, arrest, and prosecution of corrupt public officials collaborating with cartels and emphasized that current security investments in Mexico are insufficient to dismantle criminal networks.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed these sentiments while congratulating Mexico on its independence anniversary. Rubio characterized the presence of criminal organizations as “narcoterrorism” that has held Mexico “as a hostage to their criminal whims.” He noted that the influx of contraband drugs has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in the United States and stated that the Trump administration is working to weaken these organizations through increased security cooperation and economic development.
