Marco Rubio denies Alaska summit agreement, Russia's Lavrov says proposals accepted
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there was no binding agreement on Ukraine at the 2025 Anchorage summit between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin, stating, “There was a proposal at Alaska, but no agreement. If there had been an agreement, the war would already be over.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov responded that the proposals presented by the United States were accepted by Russia and criticised Rubio’s denial as “untasteful.” Lavrov said a U.S. special envoy, Steve Witkoff, delivered Trump’s proposals to Moscow before the summit and that Putin questioned each point at the meeting, confirming them. Lavrov added that the United States is abandoning its role as an “objective mediator” and increasing pressure on Russia with sanctions. He noted that China and India also backed the agreement, while U.S. officials maintain that no binding deal was reached, accusing Washington of violating the “spirit of Anchorage.”
