Marco Rubio to Brief Congress on US-Iran Deal

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff are set to brief members of the House of Representatives on the memorandum of understanding the Trump administration signed with Iran. The briefing, scheduled for 4 p.m. and streamed online, will be the first congressional appearance by the officials since the deal was announced.

Democratic leaders, including House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, criticized the agreement. Jeffries said the administration emerged from a “reckless and costly war,” while Schumer described the briefing as “delayed, deficient, and devoid of details,” warning that the deal could hand Iran billions in oil revenue and increase its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio and Witkoff reiterated that the U.S. goal remains a final agreement to eliminate Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium and that any sanctions relief will depend on a permanent deal. They also emphasized that the United States remains ready to strike Iran should it threaten international shipping.
