Marco Rubio visits India to discuss trade, energy, and defense

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is conducting a diplomatic tour through Central Asia and India to strengthen economic and security ties. After attending the C5+1 summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Rubio is scheduled to arrive in India on October 20. His itinerary focuses on Mumbai, where he will hold high-level talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Jamnagar, where he will visit a Reliance Industries refinery.

The discussions are expected to cover trade, energy cooperation, defense, and emerging technologies. The visit comes at a time of complex bilateral relations involving trade disputes and India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. Notably, President Donald Trump has temporarily paused tariffs and sanctions related to Russian fuel sales to analyze their global economic impact, providing some relief to major importers like India.

Rubio’s decision to skip the capital, New Delhi, in favor of Mumbai and Jamnagar has sparked political controversy in India. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the government, suggesting the arrangement implies the US is dictating Indian foreign policy. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs defended the choice, stating that hosting foreign dignitaries in cities outside of New Delhi is a standard practice.
