Marco Rubio to visit Central Asia and India for strategic talks

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is embarking on a strategic tour of Central Asia and India from October 17 to 22. In Central Asia, Rubio will participate in a C5+1 ministerial meeting in Samarkand, engaging with leaders from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. This visit aims to strengthen US presence in a region where Russia and China hold significant influence, with a focus on energy security, critical minerals, and transport corridors.

In India, Rubio's itinerary includes meetings with senior government officials in Mumbai and a visit to the Reliance Industries refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The visit is expected to highlight economic cooperation, energy, and investment, potentially involving Reliance's planned refinery project in Texas. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to meet Rubio in Mumbai on October 20. Additionally, Jaishankar will host the UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in Mumbai on October 19-20 to discuss bilateral cooperation and West Asian stability.

The visit has drawn political scrutiny in India, with opposition leaders questioning the logistics and the choice of Mumbai over New Delhi for high-level diplomatic meetings.
