Marco Rubio visits Uzbekistan for C5+1 talks amid Uyghur rights concerns
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to participate in C5+1 ministerial meetings with representatives from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. Rubio is accompanied by a delegation of more than 200 American business leaders, with discussions expected to focus on trade, investment, and economic cooperation.
Amid this diplomatic and commercial mission, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has urged Rubio to address the growing vulnerability of Uyghur communities in Central Asia. The WUC highlighted risks of transnational repression by China, including surveillance, intimidation, and the threat of forced returns to China, where individuals may face persecution or torture. The organization is calling for US leadership to ensure Central Asian governments do not deport or extradite Uyghurs to Chinese authorities.
Separately, reports have highlighted concerns regarding China’s aquaculture industry in the Taklamakan Desert, with investigations alleging state-backed forced labor and coerced relocations of Uyghur and other Turkic groups. The WUC also raised concerns regarding the protection of human rights defenders during previous UN tenures.
