US Secretary of State Marco Rubio advances trade and energy ties in Central Asia and India FAST-MOVING

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is conducting high-level diplomatic visits to Central Asia and India to strengthen economic, energy, and security cooperation. In Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Rubio participated in a C5+1 ministerial meeting with representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. The summit focused on critical minerals, transport infrastructure, and energy security. Uzbekistan announced 54 agreements worth $12 billion during the visit, covering sectors such as digital technology, healthcare, and agriculture. Notable arrangements include Wabtec’s plan to localize railway equipment production and mineral exploration projects involving ReElement Technologies and Traxys.

In India, Rubio met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai to discuss a pending bilateral trade agreement, which officials describe as being very close to finalization. The discussions also covered defense cooperation, emerging technologies, and energy security. Rubio addressed the strategic importance of energy diversification, noting that the US is evaluating sanction obstacles to facilitate India’s refining of Venezuelan oil. Additionally, Rubio defended recent US waivers on Russian oil sanctions, characterizing them as a 60-day pause intended to analyze the global economic impact on energy supplies and pricing.
