Marcos Jr. announces P278 million aid package for Mindanao earthquake recovery

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on 8 June 2026, killing 57 people, injuring 1,367 and leaving 17 missing. The quake displaced 21,263 families (about 85,915 individuals) and forced thousands into evacuation centres.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited the hardest‑hit areas in Sarangani province, including Glan, the town most damaged by the tremor. He inspected damaged schools and health facilities, toured evacuee centres by helicopter, and pledged immediate financial assistance.

The administration released P278 million from the Office of the President’s Socio‑Civic Projects Fund, allocated to affected provinces and cities: P50 million each for Sarangani Province and General Santos City; P30 million each for South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat; P20 million each for Davao Occidental and the town of Glan; P15 million for Zamboanga City; and between P3 million and P10 million for twelve other local government units. An additional P100 million from the Department of Budget and Management is earmarked for General Santos City hall repairs, with P50 million each for Alabel and Glan to rebuild government buildings and a hospital.

The aid aims to restore basic services, repair public infrastructure, and support displaced families as the region begins recovery and rehabilitation efforts.
