Elize Matsunaga murder case fuels Netflix series and triplex sale

The 2012 murder of Brazilian entrepreneur Marcos Kitano Matsunaga by his wife Elize Matsunaga has re‑emerged in the media following the Netflix series “Elize: Sombras de una mujer,” which premiered on 22 July 2026 and entered the platform’s global Top 10. The series revisits the crime in which Elize shot her husband on 19 May 2012, dismembered his body and hid the parts in three plastic bags placed in suitcases abandoned in a forest near Cotia, São Paulo. She was sentenced to 19 years, 11 months and 1 day, later reduced to about 16 years. Financially, Elize received roughly R$ 900 000 from the marital estate, not an inheritance, while the luxury triplex where the murder occurred – a 340‑370 m² unit in Vila Leopoldina, São Paulo, featuring five suites, a private pool, sauna, wine cellar and a panic room – has been listed for R$ 2.8 million, about 30‑32 % below market price. The property is now owned by Marcos’s parents after a legal dispute. The case also sparked viral TikTok edits that portray Elize sympathetically. Their daughter, Helena Matsunaga, now 16, lives with her paternal grandparents and is barred from contacting her mother.
