Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja, Spain's 'wolf boy', dies at 80

Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja, known globally as the ‘wolf boy of Sierra Morena,’ has died at the age of 80. He passed away in the village of Rante, located in the municipality of San Cibrao das Viñas, Spain.

Born in 1946, Pantoja’s life was defined by extreme hardship and isolation. After suffering abuse and poverty in his early childhood, he was sent to live with a goatherd in the Sierra Morena mountains at age seven. Following the death of the shepherd, Pantoja lived alone in the wilderness for approximately twelve years. During this period, he developed a unique relationship with a pack of wolves, whom he claimed provided him with companionship and protection.

He was rediscovered by the Civil Guard in 1965 at the age of 19. His reintegration into human society was famously difficult, as he had lost much of his spoken language and struggled with social norms. His extraordinary life became the subject of anthropological studies by Professor Gabriel Janer Manila and inspired various books and films. Despite his return to civilization, Pantoja often remarked that his happiest years were spent among the wolves.
