Death of Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja

Overview

Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja, known as the ‘niño lobo de Sierra Morena’ or the ‘Spanish Mowgli,’ has died in Ourense, Spain, at the age of 80.

Pantoja’s life was defined by over 12 years of total isolation in the Sierra Morena mountains after being sold by his father to a goat herder at age seven. Following the herder’s death, he survived in the wild, reportedly finding companionship and protection within a wolf pack. He lived in caves and relied on nature for food, such as berries and roots, while utilizing non-verbal communication to interact with animals. He later stated that those years in the wild were the happiest of his life, noting that he never felt as comfortable among humans as he did in the wild.

Discovered by the Guardia Civil in 1965 at age 19, Pantoja faced significant challenges reintegrating into society, including adapting to speech and social customs. His experiences became a subject of scientific and anthropological study, most notably by Gabriel Janer Manila in the mid-1970s. His life served as the inspiration for the 2010 film ‘Entrelobos.’

In 2001, Pantoja settled in the hamlet of Rante in the San Cibrao das Viñas municipality of Ourense, where he lived in relative stability until his death.
