Rio de Janeiro and Niterói implement new security measures

Security initiatives and political proposals are shaping the landscape in Rio de Janeiro and Niterói. In Rio de Janeiro, the Municipal Guard has deployed its Elite Division, ‘Força Municipal’, to combat robberies and thefts in high-traffic areas, including beaches, transport terminals, and commercial centers. This operation, which began in March, has utilized data-driven patrolling to conduct over 11,000 approaches and more than 1,000 arrests.

Politically, PL candidate Douglas Ruas has proposed making public security the central axis of his government plan to bolster tourism. His platform includes increasing police presence, using intelligence to reclaim areas held by criminal groups, and improving state roads to facilitate travel to the interior.

In Niterói, local authorities are expanding security infrastructure through two major agreements. A partnership with the city of Rio de Janeiro will interconnect their monitoring systems and include the installation of a ‘Digital Wall’ on the Rio-Niterói Bridge to track suspicious vehicles. Additionally, the Niterói City Hall signed a protocol with the Federal Police to fund a new, R$ 40 million regional headquarters, aimed at modernizing operations and combating organized crime across 14 municipalities.
