Marfin case: Terrorism charges filed against three defendants

The judicial investigation into the 2010 Marfin bank branch arson attack in Athens has entered a new phase. The Athens Prosecutor's Office has filed supplementary criminal charges against the three defendants, upgrading the case to include homicide committed within the context of terrorist acts under Article 187A of the Penal Code.

The charges also include attempted homicide against 24 bank employees who were present during the attack on May 5, 2010, which resulted in the deaths of three workers, including a pregnant woman.

The three defendants, who have been in custody since this past summer, are scheduled to provide supplementary statements to the investigating magistrate on October 21 and 23. Following these statements, the case file will be submitted to the Athens Misdemeanor Council to determine if the defendants will be referred to trial.

Defense attorneys have expressed strong opposition to the upgrade, arguing that the shift to terrorism charges is a strategic move to change the jurisdiction from a Mixed Jury Court to a Three-Member Court of Appeals, thereby removing lay citizens from the judicial process. They further contend that there is no new evidence to justify these expanded charges 16 years after the incident.
