Marfin bank arson judicial proceedings

Overview

The judicial investigation into the 2010 Marfin bank branch arson attack in Athens has entered a new phase following the filing of supplementary criminal charges. The Athens Prosecutor’s Office upgraded the case to include homicide committed within the context of terrorist acts, as well as attempted homicide against 24 employees present during the attack.

Defense attorneys have opposed the upgrade, arguing it is a strategic move to shift jurisdiction from a Mixed Jury Court to a Three-Member Court of Appeals. They contend there is no new evidence to justify the expanded charges 16 years after the incident.

As of late October 2026, the investigation is nearing completion following the questioning of all three suspects. The defendants, who include a 46-year-old woman extradited from England and two 42-year-old men, have all denied involvement in the arson. The third suspect returned to prison on Friday, October 23, after testifying before the 3rd Investigating Magistrate of Athens.

The attack, which occurred on May 5, 2010, resulted in the deaths of three employees, including a pregnant woman. Following the conclusion of the inquiry, the investigating magistrate is expected to refer the case to the prosecutor to determine if the defendants should be sent to the Three-Member Court of Appeals for Felonies.
