Margarita Papandreou dies at 103 after lifelong activism

Margarita Papandreou, a prominent activist and author, passed away on Friday, September 18, at the age of 103. A political funeral was scheduled for Sunday, September 20, at the First Cemetery of Athens.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Papandreou was the second wife of former Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou. She was a central figure in the Greek women's movement, notably founding and leading the Union of Greek Women. Her activism was instrumental in the 1983 reform of Greek family law, which achieved historic milestones such as the abolition of the dowry system, the introduction of civil marriage, and the legal establishment of gender equality within the family.

Her passing has drawn tributes from across the political spectrum, including PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis and various public figures who recognized her role in shaping modern Greek society and advancing women's rights and social justice.
