Death and funeral of Margarita Papandreou

Overview

Margarita Papandreou, a prominent Greek activist, author, and founder of the Union of Greek Women, passed away on September 18, 2026, at the age of 103. Born in Oak Park, Illinois, she was the second wife of former Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou. Her life's work was noted for its impact on Greek family law reforms, including the abolition of the dowry system, the introduction of civil marriage, the legalization of divorce, and the legal establishment of gender equality within the family.

Following her death, a political funeral was held on September 20 at the First Cemetery of Athens. The service was attended by a large gathering of family, friends, and prominent political figures from across the spectrum, including the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, Dora Bakoyannis, Interior Minister Theodoros Livianis, and Anna Diamantopoulou, who spoke on behalf of PASOK regarding Papandreou’s role in the women’s movement.

During the ceremony, her sons George, Nikos, and Andreas (Andrikos) Papandreou delivered eulogies. George stated that she ‘did not become a Greek by birth, but became one’ through her deep love and struggle for the nation, while Nikos described her as a ‘calm in the storm,’ recalling her strength during the junta. Her grandchildren also spoke, praising her for encouraging them to question and evolve. Following the ceremony, her ashes are to be scattered in the Aegean Sea.
