Margarita Papandreou funeral held in Athens
A political funeral was held at the First Cemetery of Athens for Margarita Papandreou, the 103-year-old activist, author, and former wife of PASOK founder Andreas Papandreou. She passed away on September 18.
Family members, including her sons George, Nikos, and Andreas (Andrikos), delivered emotional eulogies. George Papandreou noted that while she was not born Greek, she “became Greek” through her deep love and service to the country. Nikos Papandreou described her as a “calmness within the storm,” recalling her courage during the military junta. Her grandchildren also spoke, praising her for encouraging them to question and evolve.
The ceremony was attended by a wide range of political figures, including Parliament President Nikitas Kaklamanis, Dora Bakoyannis, and Interior Minister Theodoros Livianis. Anna Diamantopoulou spoke on behalf of PASOK, highlighting Papandreou’s role in the women’s movement and the founding of the Women's Union of Greece. Following the service, her ashes are to be scattered in the Aegean Sea.
