Maribor City Park to undergo 2 million euro renovation

The Municipality of Maribor has announced the first phase of a renovation project for the City Park, covering approximately 12.3 hectares of green and water surfaces. The project focuses on the ‘Old Park’ area and the surroundings of the first two ponds. The total cost for this initial phase is estimated at over 2 million euros including VAT.

The municipality plans to secure the majority of the funding through the Podravje Development Region mechanism, contributing approximately 160,000 euros from its own budget. The project was divided into two phases after technical documentation revealed that a comprehensive renovation of all five ponds and a Japanese garden would be more complex and expensive than originally anticipated. Additionally, the Institute for Nature Conservation requested hydrological studies for the entire pond system before water-related works proceed.

Renovations include planting 339 new trees and over 6,500 shrubs, perennials, and other plants. The plan also involves the arboristic treatment of 31 older trees and the restoration of large grassy areas. Infrastructure improvements will feature the replacement of asphalt paths with water-permeable sand paths, the renewal of cycling connections, and upgrades to the playground, lighting, and park furniture, including 110 new benches.
