Maribor urban projects face local opposition over trees and parking
Urban development projects in Maribor are facing scrutiny from local community groups regarding environmental preservation and infrastructure management.
In the Pekrski potok park renovation, a 2.5 million euro project, the 'Iniciativa mestni zbor' has called for the protection of three mature lime trees. The group argues these trees provide essential microclimatic benefits and shade that cannot be quickly replaced by new saplings. In response, the Municipality of Maribor has requested the project designers to re-examine the technical layout of the planned riding arena to see if the trees can be preserved.
Simultaneously, the newly formed 'Civilna iniciativa Maribor' has issued a public letter regarding the reduction of public parking spaces in the city center. Residents expressed frustration over the removal of parking spots on General Maister Square and Gregorčičeva Street due to ongoing renovations. The initiative criticized the municipality for failing to deliver promised parking garages and argued that sustainable development must balance green spaces with the practical living needs of residents. The municipality stated it aims to create a fair parking regime that accommodates residents, deliveries, and emergency services.
