Maribor urban renovation and greenery disputes
Overview
Urban renovation projects in Maribor have met with local opposition centered on infrastructure changes and environmental preservation.
Initial tensions arose from planned renovations in areas including Gregorčičeva Street, General Maister Square, Tyrševa Street, and Hero Stane Street. Residents and business owners expressed concern over the reduction of available parking spaces. Critics, including former city councilor Karin Jurše, argued that the municipality should have secured parking alternatives before proceeding. The municipality, via a notice signed by Mayor Saša Arsenovič, has indicated it will proceed with the renovations and issue a public tender.
As the situation evolved, opposition expanded to include environmental concerns. In the Pekrski potok park renovation, the ‘Iniciativa mestni zbor’ demanded the protection of three mature lime trees. Concurrently, the ‘Civilna iniciativa Maribor’ criticized the removal of parking spots in the city center, citing a failure to deliver promised parking garages.
Disputes regarding urban greenery have intensified following the removal of seven wild chestnut trees on Trubarjeva Street. Approximately one hundred people gathered near the City Park to protest the removal, led by the civil initiative ‘Trubarjev zadnji kostanj’. The group has presented five demands to the municipality, including the establishment of a modern local framework for tree protection and a formal strategy for managing urban trees.
The municipality defended the removal, stating the replacement was a planned renovation under consideration since 2017 and announced plans to plant 12 new trees this autumn. These environmental disputes are occurring alongside rising political tension ahead of autumn local elections, as former city councilor Aleksandar Jovanović considers a mayoral candidacy, citing a need for accountability regarding city management.
