Marine Rescue NSW records busiest August on record
Marine Rescue NSW reported its busiest August on record, with volunteers completing 273 search and rescue missions across the state. This included 97 emergency responses and the safe return of 538 people to shore, surpassing the previous August record of 267 missions set in 2022.
In the Northern Rivers region, volunteers responded to 34 incidents, with the Ballina unit conducting five missions and Point Danger recording the highest regional activity with 14. More than half of the responses during August were attributed to engine, battery, or fuel issues, often caused by poorly maintained equipment or old fuel.
Commissioner Todd Andrews noted that the record-breaking August capped an exceptionally busy winter season. He urged boaters to prioritize safety by checking vessels, monitoring weather conditions, wearing lifejackets, and using the ‘Log On’ feature via the Marine Rescue NSW app or VHF Channel 16 to assist rescuers in the event of an emergency.
