Marine Rescue NSW operational activity

Overview

Marine Rescue NSW has experienced a period of high operational demand. In August, the organization recorded its busiest August on record, with volunteers completing 273 search and rescue missions across New South Wales. Commissioner Todd Andrews noted that this record-breaking month concluded an exceptionally busy winter season, with more than half of the responses attributed to engine, battery, or fuel issues.

As the 2026-27 boating season begins, the organization has commissioned a new $343,915 fast-response vessel, the Port Kembla 20, to support maritime safety in the Illawarra region. This vessel is equipped with a thermal imaging camera to assist in low-visibility searches. Recent operations also included a rescue in Botany Bay, where volunteers assisted six paddlers after two outrigger canoes capsized due to deteriorating weather conditions.
