Marine Turtle Rescues Spotlight Italy's Conservation Efforts

Volunteers from WWF Italy assisted a Caretta caretta turtle that moved among beach chairs in Marzamemi, Sicily, and safely returned it to the sea. The incident highlights the region’s intensive nesting season, with about 80 nests already protected by local volunteers.

In a separate case, a 77‑centimetre, 47.5‑kilogram male Caretta caretta entangled in nylon ropes at the Arbatax harbour was rescued by the forest‑rangers, coast guard and port staff. After treatment at the “Due mari” clinic and a months‑long rehabilitation program, the turtle was declared fit for release on a beach near Riva di Ponente. Both events are part of a coordinated regional network that monitors and aids marine turtles in distress along the Italian coastline.
