Marineland begins third batch of whale transfers to U.S. aquariums
Marineland, a shuttered tourist attraction in Niagara Falls, Ontario, has begun a third batch of whale transfers to international aquariums. This latest group consists of six beluga whales—two males and four females—who are being transported via a police-escorted convoy to Toronto’s Pearson airport for flight to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.
The relocation effort follows a decision by the Canadian government to approve a deal with a consortium of American and Spanish aquariums. This move comes after the Canadian fisheries minister blocked a previous attempt by Marineland to sell 30 belugas to a Chinese aquarium, citing the animals' best interests. Marineland had previously threatened to euthanize its remaining whales if emergency federal funding was not provided, citing financial insolvency.
Before the recent transfers, Marineland held 30 belugas and four dolphins. Following this third shipment, 11 belugas and four dolphins remain at the facility. Other institutions, including SeaWorld in San Diego and Oceanografic Valencia in Spain, are also expected to receive animals from the park.
