Marineland Canada begins evacuation of 34 cetaceans to US and Spain
The evacuation of 34 cetaceans, including 30 beluga whales and four dolphins, has begun from the Marineland aquarium in Ontario, Canada. This rescue operation follows the facility's decision to close to the public and its subsequent sale announcement.
The relocation plan, approved by the Canadian government, aims to prevent the mass euthanasia that was previously considered a possibility for the animals. These whales represent the last of the species held in captivity in Canada.
Destinations for the animals include various facilities in the United States and Spain, specifically the Oceanogràfic in Valencia. Four belugas—Caspian, Peekachu, Rain, and Secord—have already been transferred to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The animals are being transported using specially designed harnesses and temperature-controlled containers.
