Six marine mammals, including two belugas named Cleopatra and Jelly Bean and four dolphins named Echo, Lida, Marina, and Tsunami, have been successfully relocated from the shuttered Marineland park in Ontario, Canada, to the Oceanogràfic in Valencia, Spain. The complex international operation, coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), involved a seven-hour chartered flight from Toronto to ensure the animals avoided potential euthanasia due to Marineland's financial difficulties.

This transfer is part of a larger global plan to reallocate 30 belugas and four dolphins from the facility to accredited institutions in the United States and Spain. While the move to Spain was successful, a 23-year-old beluga named Peekachu, who was recently transferred to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, died unexpectedly due to dehydration. The Shedd Aquarium is performing a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The relocation effort follows a Canadian government decision to block a proposed sale of the animals to an aquarium in China, citing compliance with 2019 captivity legislation.
