Maringá textile plant suspended over illegal water pollution

A Brazilian court granted a preliminary injunction that halts the operations of a textile factory in Maringá, Paraná, after the Public Ministry of Paraná filed a lawsuit alleging the illegal discharge of industrial liquid effluents into the Ribeirão Floriano, a major local watercourse. The 7th Civil Court ordered the immediate suspension of tinturaria, bleaching and finishing activities, the installation of a physical seal on the premises, and the posting of a notice about the decision. Non‑compliance will incur a daily fine of R$10,000, capped at R$500,000.

The Ministry seeks compensation for environmental damage and collective moral injury, noting that investigations triggered by a resident’s complaint revealed repeated violations since 2017, operation without an environmental licence and prior sanctions from environmental agencies.
