Marinus Link receives Australia's first offshore transmission licence
Marinus Link has been granted Australia’s first Transmission and Infrastructure Licence (TIL) under the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act 2021. This represents the final Commonwealth approval required before construction of the interconnector can begin.
The project consists of a 345km undersea and underground electricity and data link connecting North West Tasmania to the Latrobe Valley in Victoria. The interconnector will feature a 1500MW capacity, which is approximately three times the capacity of the existing Basslink interconnector and sufficient to power 1.5 million Australian homes.
CEO Stephanie McGregor stated that the licence allows for electricity transmission through Commonwealth waters and provides protection for the subsea cable route. The licence, which is in place until 2090, authorizes the construction, operation, maintenance, and eventual decommissioning of the subsea cables and fiber-optic infrastructure. The project is jointly owned by the Commonwealth, Tasmania, and Victoria.
