Marinus Link energy interconnector development

Overview

The Marinus Link project, a 345km undersea and underground electricity and data interconnector between North West Tasmania and Victoria, has moved from the regulatory approval phase to active construction.

In late September 2026, Marinus Link received Australia’s first Transmission and Infrastructure Licence under the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act 2021. This Commonwealth approval, valid until 2090, authorized the construction, operation, and maintenance of the 1500MW capacity subsea cables and fiber-optic infrastructure.

Following this approval, construction officially commenced on the Marinus Link and the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD). The project utilizes high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology to facilitate the exchange of Tasmanian pumped hydro for mainland solar and wind energy. While the project was scaled back in 2023, Stage One of the NWTD is expected to be operational by 2030.
