Mario Montalbetti wins José Donoso Ibero-American Prize for Letters

Peruvian poet, linguist, and essayist Mario Montalbetti has been awarded the José Donoso Ibero-American Prize for Letters. The decision was made unanimously by an international jury during the 25th edition of the award.

The University of Talca in Chile, which presents the annual prize, cited the quality, originality, and consistency of Montalbetti’s work, noting his significant influence on Ibero-American literature and culture. The award includes a medal and US$50,000, sponsored by Banco Santander.

Montalbetti, a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, expressed his gratitude to the University of Talca and noted the strong intellectual and personal ties he maintains with Chile. His literary career includes notable works such as ‘Perro Negro, 31 poemás’ (1978), ‘Fin Desierto’ (1997), and ‘Llantos Elíseos’ (2002).
