Maritime battery innovations advance vessel electrification

Lehmann Marine has secured its first commercial order for the AQUBE liquid-cooled battery system. The technology will power a new 48-meter research vessel being built by Lloyd Werft for the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Scheduled for delivery in 2027, the DLR vessel will serve as a floating technology platform to test next-generation climate-neutral propulsion systems, including hydrogen, hybrid, and fully electric setups, in the North and Baltic Seas. The AQUBE system is designed to provide high-power performance, capable of discharging its full capacity in 30 minutes to support ship maneuvering and experimental onboard equipment.

In a separate development, AYK Energy announced it will unveil a swappable containerized marine battery system at the SMM 2026 event in Hamburg. The system is designed to reduce engineering complexity and costs by eliminating the need for dedicated battery rooms. The technology aims to accelerate maritime decarbonization by making battery adoption easier for ferries, tugboats, and other commercial vessels.
