Maritime bureaucracy costs Italy 100 billion euros, says Federmare
Mario Mattioli, president of the Federazione del Mare, has stated that maritime bureaucracy and the lack of 24/7 operational systems cost Italy approximately 100 billion euros annually. This logistical gap represents about 5% of the national GDP.
Mattioli noted that these bureaucratic hurdles reduce the competitiveness of Italian ports, often forcing goods ordered from abroad to transit through Northern European gateways such as Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Antwerp instead of directly through Italy. To address this, he advocates for increased digitalization to minimize port waiting times and calls for the evolution of the current Ministry of Sea Policies into a full Ministry of the Sea.
