Maritime industry advances clean propulsion and electrification technologies

The maritime industry is focusing on technological transformations in propulsion, electrification, and autonomous systems. At the upcoming SMM 2026 exhibition, several companies will debut new energy solutions aimed at reducing emissions.

Key developments include EPTechnologies from Denmark presenting the first DNV-approved solid-state marine battery. Other battery innovations include swappable containers from AYK Energy and modular systems from SCIO Energy. In the realm of hydrogen, the NavHyS project and Italy’s Gas and Heat are working on liquid hydrogen storage and tank systems.

Hybrid propulsion is also a major focus. Rolls-Royce Power Systems will introduce mtu Series 2000 variable-speed gensets designed for battery-assisted applications, while ZF Friedrichshafen will showcase the ZF 9200 A/V PTI for electric and hybrid concepts. Additionally, Alamarin-Jet has announced its participation in several upcoming international marine industry exhibitions, including SMM in Hamburg and METS in Amsterdam.
