Maritime industry advances sustainable vessel technologies

The maritime industry is seeing significant shifts toward sustainable technology and decarbonization. In Patagonia, the company VISON is participating in the integration of a 100% electric work vessel. This vessel, which utilizes a German motor combined with Chilean-developed technology, is designed for silent navigation and zero local emissions in demanding southern waters.

In the cruise sector, a report from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) highlights advancements in environmental practices. The number of CLIA-member ships capable of using shore power (OPS) has grown from 55 in 2018 to 193 today. According to studies cited by the EPA, using shore power can reduce port emissions by up to 98%.

Additionally, Jan De Nul has announced the construction of a new submarine cable installation vessel. The ship will feature Ultra-Low Emission (ULEv) technology, which filters up to 99% of exhaust gas nanoparticles. The vessel's engines are designed to run on biofuel and are prepared for future methanol operation.
