Maritime security concerns rise following Strait of Hormuz explosion and Red Sea drone shootdown

Maritime security concerns have escalated in the Middle East following two separate incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

In the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported an explosion heard near Qeshm Island in the Hormozgan province. The blast reportedly occurred at sea, and while no missile strikes or ground impacts were recorded on the island, Iranian authorities have not yet provided an official explanation regarding the cause or exact location. No casualties or damages have been confirmed.

Simultaneously, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree announced that Houthi forces shot down a Wing Loong II armed reconnaissance drone over the airspace of Mocha in Yemen's Taiz province. The Houthis claimed the drone belonged to Saudi Arabia and was conducting ‘hostile missions’ near the Bab el-Mandeb strait. There has been no official confirmation from Riyadh regarding the incident.
