Middle East maritime and regional security crisis
Overview
Maritime and regional security concerns have intensified in the Middle East following reports of an explosion near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and a Houthi drone shootdown over Yemen. Houthi forces claimed to have downed a Saudi Arabian Wing Loong II reconnaissance drone near the Bab el-Mandeb strait.
Following these incidents, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani addressed the United Nations General Assembly, warning of a security crisis in the Gulf and Jordan that is of a severity “not seen in decades.” He attributed the instability to approximately 7,000 attacks involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones by Houthi rebels and Iranian-aligned militias.
Al Zayani reported significant maritime disruption, including the detention of 2,000 commercial vessels, damage to 72 merchant ships, and the deaths of at least 22 sailors. He further warned against the potential de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, characterizing such actions as a tool for economic coercion.
