Strait of Hormuz maritime security risks threaten global trade

The Strait of Hormuz is facing severe maritime security threats, with the World Trade Organization warning of the worst global trade disruption in 80 years. Recent incidents include two cargo vessel attacks within a 48-hour window, contributing to a total of 80 verified attacks in the region since February 2026, according to the International Maritime Organization.

Shipping activity has seen significant fluctuations. Commodity vessel transits dropped to just four vessels recently, well below the 10-day average. While oil flows have recovered to approximately two-thirds of pre-war levels through various transit methods, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) flows have faced prolonged disruptions, causing gas prices in Asia and Europe to surge.

Economic consequences are mounting. The WTO notes that crude oil prices exceeding $90 per barrel could reduce global trade growth by 0.5 percentage points. Furthermore, the instability is triggering supply crises in diesel, fertilizer, and petrochemicals, potentially impacting global food security. To mitigate risks, many shipping companies are rerouting vessels via the Cape of Good Hope, which increases transit times and operational costs.
