Alberta to hold referendum on provincial status in Canada

Alberta is scheduled to hold a referendum on Monday, October 19, 2026, regarding its status within the Canadian federation. The central, non-binding question asks voters whether the province should remain in Canada or initiate a legal process for a future binding vote on secession.

Premier Danielle Smith, who supports Alberta remaining in Canada but initiated the referendum following a petition with approximately 300,000 signatures, has committed to launching a legally binding separation process if a majority votes for independence. The ballot includes ten total questions, with the remaining nine addressing provincial control over immigration, constitutional reforms, and access to social services.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has conducted a tour of the province, including rallies in Calgary and Edmonton, to campaign for national unity. Carney warned that external forces are attempting to divide the country and cautioned that separation could lead to years of economic uncertainty and deep division. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also urged Albertans to stay and fight for the country rather than seeking separation.

Elections Alberta anticipates a high voter turnout, potentially exceeding 80 per cent. While recent polling suggests a majority of Albertans favor remaining in Canada, some separatist organizations suggest the movement maintains significant support.
