Mark Nawaqanitawase's rugby league success validates Australian talent
Dual international Michael O’Connor has stated that Mark Nawaqanitawase’s successful transition to rugby league serves as evidence that Australian rugby union continues to produce world-class talent.
Nawaqanitawase, a former Wallabies winger, moved to rugby league following the 2023 World Cup, joining the Sydney Roosters. During a 26-month stint in league, he became the top try-scorer in 2025, earned selection for the Kangaroos, won an Origin series, and secured an NRL title.
Nawaqanitawase is now returning to rugby union, having signed with the Japanese League One club Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights. O’Connor noted that the player returning to the sport is even more developed than when he originally departed.
