Mark Nawaqanitawase rugby union transition

Overview

Discussions regarding Mark Nawaqanitawase’s potential return to rugby union began with support from Wallabies player Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii. Suaalii noted that Nawaqanitawase’s skills from the NRL could bolster the Australian squad and increase internal competition for the upcoming World Cup.

Following a successful period in rugby league with the Sydney Roosters—which included becoming a top try-scorer and winning an NRL title—Nawaqanitawase has signed with the Japanese League One club Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights. Dual international Michael O’Connor remarked that his return to rugby union validates the quality of Australian talent, noting the player is “even more developed than when he originally departed.”
