Markus Marterbauer to become SPÖ Vice Chancellor

Markus Marterbauer, the current Austrian Finance Minister, is set to become the Vice Chancellor of the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) at the end of the year. Due to his ongoing battle with cancer, his transition to the party leadership may be delayed until a party congress in March, depending on his health.

Marterbauer has expressed strong opposition to the Freedom Party (FPÖ), stating that an FPÖ Chancellor would be a catastrophe. While some media outlets view him as a potential savior for the SPÖ, critics point to his fiscal policies as a source of concern. Under his tenure as Finance Minister, several tax increases and adjustments have been implemented, including expanded insurance taxes on electric vehicles, increased tobacco taxes, and higher betting fees. Additionally, critics have noted the failure to adjust family benefits to inflation for the years 2027 and 2028.
