Marília Mendonça film faces R$5 million image fee dispute

A biographical film about Brazilian singer Marília Mendonça has become the focus of a controversy after reports that her mother, Dona Ruth, asked for around R$5 million to authorize the use of the singer’s image. The claim sparked a live argument on SBT’s afternoon program “Fofocalizando”, where presenters split over the issue. Carol Lekker defended the mother’s right to set a price, while Matheus Baldi, Gaby Cabrini and Thayse Teixeira questioned the amount, noting that typical fees for image rights in Brazilian productions range from R$100 thousand to R$200 thousand.

The debate also raised broader concerns about the ethics of commercializing the legacy of public figures and the treatment of other victims of the 2021 plane crash that killed Mendonça. The film, scheduled for release on a streaming platform next year, features Marina Versos as Marília, Hermila Guedes as Dona Ruth, and other cast members portraying key figures in the singer’s life.
