Marta Kos cancels Serbia visit over Ratko Mladić glorification
EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has canceled her planned visit to Serbia, citing that the glorification of Ratko Mladić following his death is incompatible with European values. Mladić, the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, was convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes by the ICTY and died in a Hague prison.
In Belgrade, a memorial service was held at the House of the Yugoslav Army, attended by high-ranking officials including Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić and Republika Srpska President Siniša Karan. Speakers at the ceremony praised Mladić as a hero and a defender of the Serbian people, with some suggesting his biography should be taught in schools.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić criticized Kos's decision, describing her explanation as 'stupid' and accusing her of being a messenger for negative narratives against Serbia. He emphasized that the state would provide logistical support for the funeral, which is scheduled to take place at the Topčidersko cemetery in Belgrade.
