Marta Kos details new EU enlargement and integration proposals

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has detailed upcoming proposals for a more ambitious approach to gradual integration within the European Union. Speaking at an International Monetary Fund meeting, Kos announced that the European Commission will present these proposals on September 30.

The proposed strategy focuses on strengthening strategic sectors that will shape the continent's future, including energy, transport, critical raw materials, digital networks, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Kos emphasized the need to prevent future members from developing dependencies on states that conflict with long-term European interests.

Addressing concerns regarding internal stability, Kos discussed the necessity of protective measures to ensure the EU remains capable of decision-making after admitting new members. She noted that the rule of law is essential for securing foreign investment and maintaining legal equality. Kos also identified Russia and China as significant risks to the enlargement process, citing Russian efforts to disrupt the accession of candidate states, such as Montenegro, through cyberattacks.
