Marta Kos urges North Macedonia to fulfill constitutional amendment commitments
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has stated that North Macedonia must fulfill its commitment to amend its constitution, an obligation agreed upon with all 27 EU member states. Kos noted that once these constitutional changes are implemented, she will look for support from Bulgaria to advance North Macedonia’s integration process. She expressed confidence in working with the new Bulgarian government to move the process forward.
In a related development, a draft proposal from the European Commission suggests a new framework for faster enlargement. This package includes incentives such as accelerated accession, access to the European market, and increased financial support, alongside measures like the abolition of roaming. However, the proposal also includes restrictive measures, such as the potential removal of veto rights and financial restrictions for new members that fail to uphold the rule of law. This move aims to prevent single member states from blocking EU decision-making, a concern heightened by the prospect of expanding the union to include countries like Ukraine.
